Criteria and procedure for inclusion of journals
Date Range
The objective of Periodicals Archive Online is to make journal backfiles available electronically, providing access to older content that has not been digitised previously. For this reason, we only digitise material published no later than 2000 (we include every issue from Volume 1, issue 1 up to this termination date or the final issue, whichever is first).(1) We also require that a journal has a substantial backfile preceding 2000.
(1) The coverage of journals in Periodicals Archive Online formerly ended at 1995, but titles added more recently terminate at 2000. All journals added in future will have this extended coverage.
Subject coverage
Periodicals Archive Online encompasses the arts, humanities and social sciences and the range of subjects is wide within these parameters. Potential inclusions must be compatible with this coverage.
We digitise high-quality, scholarly journals, the majority of which are peer-reviewed. Non-refereed journals are also considered, however, as there are many strong titles whose contributions are not subject to the peer-review process.
The likely breadth of a journal's appeal is considered, but there is scope for the selection of publications with a more niche interest when they are of sufficient quality and repute. Journals with a multidisciplinary emphasis are welcomed, although many subject-specific titles are also included.
Language
The majority of journals in Periodicals Archive Online are English-language. We do, however, include a significant number of journals in other languages, including numerous multi-language titles.
Format
Newspapers, journals composed entirely of pictorial matter and journals that are indexes (i.e. abstracts, current contents services or bibliographies) are not considered. Monograph series are included, however.
Procedure
If you believe that your journal meets the above criteria, please contact us to alert us to this title. We require, as a minimum, the journal title, ISSN and your return contact details, but please supply any further information that you feel may be helpful in our evaluation. Tables of contents, for example, are particularly useful. If it is decided that your publication is a suitable candidate for inclusion, you will be contacted and advised of the next step.
